| Lethur (aka: Donhallerin) A quiet farming community lying in a fertile valley in north-eastern Dambrath, Lethur is best known (until recently) for a nearby plinth that rises straight up out of the ground. This plinth is as high as ten men, and has been weathered by long exposure to the elements. Local legends say that the plinth was once the body of a titan who angered some god and was turned to stone as punishment. Other tales claim that the plinth is some sort of dwarven contraption, a hollow tube accessible only from either deep underground or from the very top of the stone (those who tell this version also usually add that the "tower" is full of long-abandoned dwarven gold and gems, or magical items). It should be noted that the plinth is surrounded by tilled fields, and that the locals take a dim view of anyone trying to dig up the fields in an attempt to find a "hidden entrance". Also, several mages have levitated or flown to the top, but have found no opening or doorway or any sort. Whatever the truth, it is certain that there are no other rock formations of this kind nearby. Lethur has recently went through a boom-town phase, due largely in part to a recent discovery by the local wizard, Teffor Morgoth. Teffor's excursions into the nearby bog of Dongul (a swamp near town that extends all the way into the Greypeak Mts. to its south) led to the discovery of an underground labyrinth. The labyrinth consists of a massive underground complex that dates back several centuries. It seems to have been a kind of subterranean fortress whose surface foundations have been razed. The upper levels of the stronghold are accessible, though assumed lower levels seem sealed off, lost to fester in time and in darkness. In the years following its fall, bandits, orcs and other threats have infested the upper halls. Further, lore is already being made that speaks of powerful artifacts and untested arcane engines of destruction lost in the sealed lower levels, guarded by terrible traps and the vengeful memories of those who came before... Dongul Swamp: Mosquitoes, horseflies, and worse things buzz through the air in thick clouds. Sickly trees draped with moss and rot cluster amongst the muddy, murky waters. Weeds and long grass sprout from the water, hindering movement and disguising the quicksand and deep, muddy pools that form throughout the area. Dongul Swamp is among the most difficult areas to traverse. Most wise travelers give it a wide berth. |
